Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote democratic rights in Venezuela.
The Nobel Peace Prize, first awarded in 1901 under the will of Alfred Nobel, recognises individuals and organisations that have made exceptional contributions to peace, diplomacy and humanitarian work. Selected by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, it remains one of the world’s most prestigious honours, celebrating achievements in conflict resolution, disarmament and fostering fraternity among nations.
India has produced two Nobel Peace laureates: Mother Teresa, honoured in 1979 for her humanitarian work among Kolkata’s poor, and Kailash Satyarthi, who won in 2014 for his campaign against child labour and trafficking. Both have become enduring symbols of compassion and service, embodying Nobel’s vision of peace through humanity.
This year’s announcement drew global attention not only for potential laureates but also for the recurring Donald Trump angle. The US president has repeatedly claimed he “deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in mediating conflicts, including the Gaza ceasefire. He has said he deescalated “seven wars” and hinted the number could rise to eight.
Historically, only four US presidents have received the Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.
Nobel Peace Prize 2025: Mahatma Gandhi nominated multiple times but never awarded
Mahatma Gandhi, one of the strongest symbols of non-violence in the 20th century, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and shortly before his assassination in January 1948.
Although Gandhi was never awarded the prize—since posthumous awards are not permitted under Nobel statutes—the Norwegian Nobel Committee chose to make no award in 1948, citing that there was “no suitable living candidate.”
